Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) is an international technology group based in Munich, which has developed from banknote, security and passport printing into a specialist for chip cards and security solutions. The traditional company was founded on June 1, 1852 by Hermann Giesecke (1831–1900) and Alphonse Devrient (1821–1878) in Leipzig as a typographic art institute “Giesecke & Devrient” and maintains over 58 subsidiaries and joint ventures worldwide in 31 countries. G&D employed 11,379 people in the 2015 financial year. In the same year, the company generated total sales of 2 billion euros. With its products, the company is one of the global market and technology leaders.

G&D initially specialized in banknote and security printing. From the 1960s, the company also produced security paper, from the 1970s machines for banknote processing and chip cards for banking applications. In addition, G&D was significantly involved in SIM card development, which was followed by the expansion of the area of ID cards.
